Using IFC models

Course plan:

Day 1 (4h):

  • Explanation of the IFC model structure.
  • Overview of the IFC model creation. (How IFC model is generated from a native design software and what can go wrong in that process). Short overview into a design software in order to get a overview of the original design software model.
  • Introduction of IFC model viewer functionalities on the basis of Simplebim or BIMcollab ZOOM (import of model, export to excel, cross-sectioning, coloring of elements, visualization, calculation of quantities).
  • Creation of model element groups.
  • Model based communication (using and managing BCF file format).
  • Answers to questions. Practical examples on the Customers model(s).
  • Questions & Answers. Discussion.

Day 2 (4h):

  • Study of more specific functions that are important in the trainees BIM workflow.
  • Configurations of templates. Automatization of model based processes and validation of the model quality.
  • Introduction to BIM coordination software possibilities in order to generate a better understanding on what to expect from a BIM coordinator. (Does not contain study of software, but gives a overview of the process).
  • Combination of information from different sources (excel tables, IFC models) and based on the combined information a quick analyze of quantities.
  • Model viewing possibilities in a smart device. (Short introduction and examples of real use cases).
  • As-built model. What it is and how to create it?
  • Questions & Answers. Discussion.

The course duration is 2 half days (4h+4h).

Course outcome:

  • Can read the content inside a IFC model and understands, that it is not only a visual material, but a database.
  • Can extract information from a IFC model for example into an excel spreadsheet.
  • Understands how to use model based communication format BCF.
  • Express yourself correctly, what kind of IFC model needs to be generated by the designers.
